Domingo Alcaraz-Segura

Brief info

Professor and postdoctoral researcher, I specialize in assessing the effects of global change on ecosystem functioning and services based on data and remote sensing methods as well as developing monitoring and warning systems for changes in socio-ecosystem functioning and protected areas and the definition of geographic priorities in conservation.

Together with my colleagues, we proposed a new concept in Ecology called “Functional Ecosystem Type” (FET). EFTs have been successfully used to improve models of climate and species distribution, to characterize the functional diversity of ecosystems, to assess functional representativeness and the capacity to provide services of protected area networks. We have also developed the Monitoring and Alert System for functional changes in the Spanish Parks Network (REMOTE).

I published 47 articles in JCR-indexed journals, 15 articles in non-indexed journals, 15 international book chapters, 24 national book chapters and published 1 international book. I directed 35 projects (1 H2020, 1 National, 1 Andaluz, 1 UGR, 1 Fundación Mapfre) and 2 research contracts and participated in 25 projects and 13 research contracts. I have already made 61 communications for international congresses and 38 for national ones. I collaborated on review assignments for 20 JCR indexed journals. My research opened new lines at the Universities of Almeria and Granada and led to the creation of the Andalusian Center for the Assessment and Monitoring of Global Change.

Since 2019, I have been an Associate Professor (civil servant, Full Professor at the University) at the Department of Botany at the University of Granada, where I joined as an assistant professor in 2011. My teaching also includes English classes, and I participated in plans to promote multilingualism. I directed 11 undergraduate dissertations, 16 master's theses, 6 doctoral theses (2 in progress). I highlight my work as coordinator of the Master in Conservation, Management and Restoration of Biodiversity at the University of Granada since 2018 (secretary from 2013 to 2018). I was a member of the committee that prepared the report for the creation of the Andalusian Center for the Assessment and Monitoring of Global Changes
